Endless restore loop ...

I have a 30 GB iPod classic from May 2006. I'm stuck in this infamous loop that I've experienced once before. It's terribly frustrating and sad, and I've tried most solutions I've seen across the web. I've changed drive letters, updated software and iTunes. When this happened a few weeks ago, the problem turned out to be a song I downloaded was a bad file. I deleted it and then the iPod synced. But ok - here's what's happening exactly.

-Played iPod. Wouldn't respond. Tried to restart but came up with "Connect to iTunes to restore."
-I connected it to iTunes and I restored the iPod. My iPod is cleaned out and it has it's factory settings, but it won't come up with the normal "Name your iPod" screen. It just says it needs to restore. Therefore I can't sync anything.

I'd rather not download an old iTunes or take off all of my music - simply because I have two backup drives on my computer, so my music is very scattered.

I'm probably just going to resort to buying a new one, because I don't think the newer ones have this issue...

But if anyone has any input, I'd appreciate it.
